Terms of Service
Last updated: July 16, 2026
Please read these Terms of Service ("Terms") before using the Asteroid Audiobook Player application ("App").
1. Acceptance
By installing or using the App, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the App.
2. Intended use
Asteroid is designed for people who build and manage their own audiobook library. The App does not provide audiobooks. It helps organize, browse, and play audio files you already own or control—such as DRM-free purchases, audiobook CDs, and public-domain recordings.
You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to listen to the audiobooks you play.
The App requires a cloud storage account where you keep your files (such as Dropbox or OneDrive). When you connect a cloud provider or use public metadata services (Open Library and, where enabled, Google Books), the App acts as a client on your behalf. You are responsible for complying with those services' terms and any rights required to access your files and metadata.
3. Open Library and metadata
Asteroid extracts title and author candidates from folder names, file names, and embedded tags on the device. Selected search terms may be sent from your device to Open Library (and similar providers where enabled) to retrieve matching book information and covers. File contents, your name or email, and cloud credentials are not sent. Open Library may receive each search query plus technical request data such as your IP address. Over time, many queries from the same IP could suggest which books were looked up—this is not the same as knowing your identity, but it is not fully anonymous.
Metadata downloaded to your device from Open Library must be handled in accordance with Open Library's terms and policies. See also the Privacy Policy.
4. Disclaimer of warranties
THE APP IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE AUTHORS DISCLAIM LIABILITY FOR DAMAGES ARISING FROM USE OF THE APP.
5. Third-party services
Asteroid depends on third-party services (cloud storage providers such as Dropbox and OneDrive, Open Library, Google Books, Google Play, Firebase). We do not guarantee their availability, speed, accuracy, or continued integration. Features that rely on external APIs may change, slow down, be rate-limited, or stop working without notice. Asteroid does not operate any servers.
6. Supporter contributions
Asteroid Basic is free: listen and browse your library with no ads. Your first 90 days include full functionality so you can evaluate the app. There is no obligation to become a supporter.
Optional contributions through the in-app tip jar are processed by Google Play Billing:
- Monthly supporter — a subscription managed by Google Play (including a 90-day free trial when offered). Cancel anytime in Google Play.
- One-time supporter — a single voluntary contribution with no ongoing payments.
- Contributions support development; they are not a product purchase or service guarantee.
- After the trial period, basic listening stays free. Supporter features require an active monthly or one-time contribution.
- Refunds are handled under Google Play's standard refund policies.
- On another device, use Restore supporter in Settings (same Google account) for one-time supporter.
7. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Sweden, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
