Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 27, 2026
Asteroid Audiobook Player is an ad-free hobby project. We respect your privacy and believe you should retain ownership of your data. The app does not sell your personal data.
1. Local storage and file access
To support playback, offline listening, and restoring app state, Asteroid stores cached files on your device in storage areas provided by Android for the app. This may include downloaded audiobook files, metadata, cover images, playback progress, bookmarks, and related app data.
This data stays on your device unless you choose to use optional Google Drive backup (see below). Asteroid does not upload your audiobook files to our servers.
2. Google Drive
You sign in with Google and pick a Drive folder for your library, or use optional cloud backup in a private app-data area on your own Drive account. Asteroid may access folders you explicitly select using Google's file picker. The app indexes, reads, and plays media only from folders you choose. File contents and folder indexes are not collected or sent to our servers.
Technical:
- drive.file — read and download files only inside folders you pick.
- drive.appdata — optional backup of listening progress, bookmarks, and metadata JSON in your private app-data folder.
Credentials and tokens stay on your device and are sent only to Google's official APIs. We do not receive your Google credentials or file contents on our own servers.
3. Public metadata lookups
During library scan, Asteroid may query public services such as Open Library using book title and author text derived from your folders and tags. Queries are anonymous and do not include personal identifiers beyond what is required for a network request (such as your IP address).
4. Crash reporting
Anonymous crash reports may be sent via Google Firebase Crashlytics to improve stability. Reports can include device model, OS version, and stack traces. They are not used for advertising.
5. In-app contributions (tip jar)
Optional Supporter Status is handled through Google Play Billing. Payment processing is performed by Google; we do not receive your payment card details.
6. Children's privacy
The app does not knowingly collect personal information from children. It is designed to work with files and accounts you control.
